The Tenants Union Education Program
The Tenants’ Union Education Program helps tenants to get the knowledge and skills to keep themselves and their families safely housed. Tenants in Washington have no government agency to rely on to enforce the laws; instead “self-help” remedies are written into the law for tenants to enforce ourselves. The TU provides empowerment-based education and assistance to help tenants learn their rights and take action to resolve housing problems.
The hotline is now only one part of a program that also includes 1-on-1 tenant counseling, an award winning website and workshops and services in multiple languages to serve a diverse community. Trained non-attorney staff and volunteers listen to tenants concerns, ask questions to draw out key information and then identify the legal issues facing the tenants. Counselors then describe or show tenants the laws, explain the options and help tenants take the action necessary to resolve their housing crisis safely.
