Job Title: Community Organizer & Tenant Counselor
Supervisor: Deputy Director
Hours: 40 hrs/week (1.0 FTE)
Salary: $37,800 annually
Benefits: Eligible for paid medical and dental care; vacation and sick leave following three-month (90 day) probation period. Additional benefits as defined by the personnel policies.

The Tenants Union is a grassroots membership organization dedicated to decent and affordable
housing for everyone. Our goals are to help all tenants, especially low income tenants, solve their
rental housing problems by learning and asserting their rights as tenants; to organize within their
buildings and neighborhoods to maintain and preserve decent and affordable rental housing; and to
mobilize for stronger tenant protections and greater accountability of the institutions affecting
their homes.
Job Summary: As the primary connection between the public and the organization, the role of the
Community Organizer & Tenant Counselor demands a high level of professionalism, charisma, and
dedication. Community Organizers oversee the proper implementation of at least one (1) TU campaign and support all organizers in the implementation of their campaigns. Additionally, Community Organizers will work alongside the Executive Director in keeping the TU staff abreast of all current happenings in housing and landlord-tenant laws. The position has a geographic emphasis in Seattle and South King County. The organizer will connect tenant leaders to related policy advocacy and link to larger campaigns for advancing tenants’ rights to preserve decent affordable housing.

Essential Responsibilities, Duties and Tasks:
Community Organizing and Education (70%)
• In collaboration with other organizing staff, make strategic organizing campaign plans to
further social change goals; support organizing campaigns as needed, including one-on-one
leadership development; take a public role in holding institutions and individuals accountable for unjust housing policies or practices; and participate as a leader in direct action to support campaign goals.
• Develop strategies to achieve tenant goals through collective action.
• Design and implement organizing campaigns.
• Give public presentations on housing policy issues and tenants’ rights to a broad variety of
audiences, including low-income tenants, elected officials, and community organizations.
• Train tenants in organizing skills, tenant rights and housing policies impacting low-income
people and people of color.
• Door to door outreach to tenants in subsidized or substandard housing.
• Leverage media effectively to advance organizing campaigns.
• Generate positive media exposure of organizational initiatives and campaigns through press
releases, organizing press events, editorial board meetings, pitching stories to reporters and
editors, and developing and maintaining strong relationships with individual reporters.
• Represent the organization in print, radio, television, and alternative media, using
effective key messages.
• Cultivate and edit articles for quarterly newsletter.
• Post relevant items on website and various social media platforms.
• Recruit new members to the Tenants Union.
• Participate in training new organizing staff where appropriate.
• Attend weekly staff meetings.

Tenant Leadership
• Develop leadership capacity among tenant leaders and new members.
• Link organized tenant groups to larger campaigns for housing justice.
• Work with tenants to carry out strategies and tactics identified by tenants to impact local,
state, or federal policy relating to housing or renters rights.
• Participate in collaborative partnerships with national and other local organizations.
• Train tenant groups on best practices in tenant association governance and decision-making.
• Train tenants on power mapping and how to best to resolve disputes with owners.
• Provide ongoing counseling to newly created tenant associations to help longevity of the group.
• Encourage membership among individuals and tenants associations.

Tenant Counseling (20%)
• Provide empowering and compassionate tenants’ rights counseling 9-12 hours per week as part
of the Tenants Union’s Education Program.
• Counsel tenants about their rights under state and local laws.
• Create written informational materials for tenants about housing issues and tenants’ rights.
• Coordinate staffing to ensure coverage for the hotline.
• Timely data entry in membership database information systems.

Policy & Advocacy (10%)
Assist Executive Director in mobilizing staff, Board, and members into advocacy
efforts, including preparing, coordinating and presenting legislative testimony at the municipal,
county and state levels.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Demonstrated ability to work well with diverse groups of people and willingness to challenge
oneself and others to undo racism, homophobia, xenophobia (fear or hatred of immigrants) and other forms of oppression.
• Community organizing experience (volunteer or paid).
• Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
• Willingness to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends.
• Attention to detail.
• A demonstrated commitment to grassroots organizing for social and racial justice.
• A deep understanding of the complex personal and institutional impacts of racism, sexism,
classism, and other oppressions.
• Ability to manage many tasks, prioritize, and problem solve under pressure.
• Comfort with and skills using technology.

Desired Qualifications:
• Knowledge of housing issues and/or landlord-tenant law.
• Lived experience with low-income housing.
• Experience in policy analysis.
• Legislative advocacy skills and experience.
• Experience working with the media.
• Proficiency in Spanish, Amharic, Somali, Vietnamese, Russian or other relevant second
• Expertise in Salesforce or related databases, Microsoft Word or Publisher.
