Changes to Tenant Screenings

From March 2016

SB 6413 passed the WA State legislature and was signed into law by Governor Inslee! This law changes the way judges code evictions, requires landlords to let tenants know when they accept portable screening reports, and increases the time landlords have to return security deposits from 14 to 21 days.

This is a step in the right direction. It recognizes that all evictions are not equal and requires landlords to disclose possible lower cost options when searching for apartment homes. While we do not agree with the increased time for security deposits, we see this as a necessary compromise to increase renting opportunities for those with successful eviction cases.

Please check out the Washington State Low Income Housing Alliance’s press release on the matter to learn more about the lawmakers involved in this long advocated for law.
