King Coun­ty Coun­cil Rein­states Ten­ants Rights Funding!

Dur­ing a very dif­fi­cult bud­get year, the King Coun­ty Coun­cil vot­ed to rein­state fund­ing for cru­cial ten­ants rights edu­ca­tion which goes to empow­er thou­sands of res­i­dents across the coun­ty! Send the Coun­cil a brief note to thank them, and thanks to every­one who called on them to sup­port tenants!

TU Hir­ing Spokane-based Sec­tion 8 Com­mu­ni­ty Organizer

The Ten­ants Union of Wash­ing­ton State seeks a cre­ative, engag­ing, and thought­ful part-time com­mu­ni­ty orga­niz­er to play a key role in a very excit­ing statewide effort to orga­nize ten­ants in project-based Sec­tion 8 build­ings. The Spokane-based STOP Com­mu­ni­ty Orga­niz­er uses out­reach, edu­ca­tion, orga­niz­ing, and ten­ant lead­er­ship devel­op­ment to pre­serve afford­able hous­ing, win hous­ing improve­ments, and increase ten­ant con­trol over hous­ing. Cam­paign work may focus on the preser­va­tion of build­ing sub­si­dies, the reha­bil­i­ta­tion of dete­ri­o­rat­ing build­ings, the for­ma­tion of ten­ant coun­cils, and oth­er strate­gic goals that sup­port ten­ants hav­ing a place at the deci­sion-mak­ing table. The most impor­tant aspect of this work will be to cul­ti­vate ten­ant lead­er­ship and com­mu­ni­ty through edu­ca­tion and lead­er­ship development.

The TU Edu­ca­tion Pro­gram Clin­ic and Hot­line will be CLOSED Mon­day in obser­vance of Vet­er­ans Day. All ser­vices will resume on their reg­u­lar sched­ule the rest of the week.

After a 5 year cam­paign — and almost 20 years for the TU — the City Coun­cil unan­i­mous­ly vot­ed in the Rental Hous­ing Reg­is­tra­tion & Inspec­tion Pro­gram, a bill that will dra­mat­i­cal­ly shift the pow­er imbal­ance between land­lords and ten­ants and hold the slum­lords in our com­mu­ni­ty accountable.

Help Cel­e­brate the TU’s 30th birthday!

For 30 years the Ten­ants Union has lived out the mis­sion estab­lished by our founders to fight for hous­ing jus­tice through edu­ca­tion, orga­niz­ing and advo­ca­cy. Mem­bers and sup­port­ers have put them­selves on the line for jus­tice; orga­niz­ing against dis­crim­i­na­tion, fight­ing for civ­il rights, risk­ing a roof over­head to win bet­ter hous­ing con­di­tions, ral­ly­ing in the streets, tes­ti­fy­ing to law mak­ers, and even get­ting arrest­ed at a sit-in in the Mayor’s office.
