Take Action for Seat­tle Tenants!

Bud­gets are bor­ing for a rea­son — to keep us from pay­ing atten­tion! But we can’t let that stop us from mak­ing our voic­es heard. The Seat­tle City Coun­cil is cur­rent­ly mak­ing 2018 bud­get deci­sions. We’re grate­ful that the Coun­cil con­tin­ues to express sup­port for renters, but we need more.

ACTION ALERT: Stop Char­maine’s Evic­tion TODAY

When Char­maine received a late notice for her rent, she imme­di­ate­ly secured assis­tance from SHARE so she and her fam­i­ly could remain in their home. How­ev­er, Dove Prop­er­ty Man­age­ment refused to pro­vide a signed tax form and accept the pay­ment, instead fil­ing an evic­tion on behalf of land­lords Ken­neth and Tomoko Ono. Char­maine has now paid Sep­tem­ber and Octo­ber rent direct to the court but Dove is STILL try­ing to evict her fam­i­ly and charge them lawyer fees.

South Lake Union: a Neigh­bor­hood For All Families?

TU lead­ers and staff have been work­ing with Puget Sound Sage and oth­er groups to empha­size the need for afford­able hous­ing as Seat­tle, includ­ing South Lake Union, under­goes devel­op­ment and the rent goes steadi­ly high­er, dis­plac­ing low income renters. The TU wants to make sure low income renters are includ­ed in South Lake Union and that the City is doing enough to stem the land­slide loss of afford­able hous­ing in the greater down­town area. The Seat­tle City Coun­cil will vote next week to strength­en zon­ing laws to cre­ate more afford­able hous­ing in South Lake Union, but cur­rent pro­pos­als only cre­ate units in the hun­dreds when the need is in the thou­sands. Act now to demand stronger afford­able hous­ing requirements!

The Seat­tle Hous­ing Author­i­ty will be hav­ing a lot­tery to cre­ate a new Sec­tion 8 Hous­ing Vouch­er Wait­list. Any­one over 18 years of age can apply. Appli­ca­tions are on-line only and you can reg­is­ter at www​.seat​tle​hous​ing​.org/​w​a​i​tlist. Reg­is­tra­tion will be open from Feb­ru­ary 4, at 7 AM until Feb­ru­ary 22 at 5 PM.
